Welcome to Day 2 of Digital Health Equity Week!
Yesterday, we explored what shapes our health, the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
Today, we focus on what you can do to make your workplace or community healthier and safer.
The small changes that can make a big difference to well being, productivity, and morale. And the best part? Most of these strategies are simple, low-cost, and easy to start using today.
Practical Strategies for Healthier Workplaces
1. Reduce Stress at Work
Stress can affect your energy, focus, and overall health.
Tips:
Take short breaks during the day, even just 5 minutes per hour to stretch or rest.
Encourage informal check-ins with fellow traders or colleagues, sharing challenges can lighten the load.
Listen to music or take deep breaths while working to relax your mind.
2. Keep Your Workspace Safe
Unsafe work conditions can lead to injuries and long-term health issues.
Tips:
Keep your stall or shop tidy to prevent slips or accidents.
Ensure pathways are clear and items are stored safely.
If you work outside, create shaded areas or wear protective gear to prevent heat or sun-related problems.
3. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
Healthy food and water keep your energy up and your mind sharp.
Tips:
Bring simple, affordable snacks like fruits, nuts, or boiled eggs.
Drink enough clean water throughout the day. The World Health Organisation (WHO), recommends about 2–3 litres of safe drinking water daily for adults, depending on activity level, climate, and individual needs.
Share knowledge with your peers about easy, healthy meals that fit a busy schedule.
4. Ergonomics (Exercise): Protect Your Body
Long hours standing or lifting can strain your body over time.
Tips:
Change positions regularly, sit, stand, or stretch.
Use simple tools like cushions or footrests to support posture.
Avoid lifting heavy items alone; ask for help if possible.
